Manufacturing cosmetics such as creams, lotions, ointments, or emulsions requires exceptional precision.   • Homogenizer location – It can be bottom-mounted (the most popular solution for viscous masses) or operated via an external recirculation line, which facilitates adding dry ingredients and increases process intensity.
  • Power and rotational speed – These parameters must match the rheology and viscosity of your products. A homogenizer that is too weak won't create a stable emulsion, while one that is too powerful might "over-shear" and destroy delicate active ingredients.

Agitator Geometry and Scraping System

A homogenizer alone is not enough. To move dense cosmetic mass into the high-shear zone, low-speed agitators are needed to force product movement throughout the vessel. Coaxial or counter-rotating systems (such as anchor or frame agitators) work best.

PTFE (Teflon) scrapers are a critical component. Dense creams and emulsions tend to stick to the vessel walls. Scrapers continuously remove product build-up, preventing burning (during heating phases) and drastically improving heat transfer. Ensure that the scraper mechanism on a used unit is in good condition and that the scraper blades are easy to replace.

Vacuum System – An Absolute Must in Cosmetics

Introducing air bubbles into a cream is a fast track to reduced shelf life (accelerated oxidation), filling issues, and an unappealing texture.

A cosmetic homogenizing mixer must feature a fully functional vacuum system (a vacuum pump and a sealed vessel capable of withstanding negative pressure). Vacuum allows for:

  • Effective mass deaeration (degassing).
  • Liquid and dry ingredient suction directly into the homogenizing zone (below the liquid surface), eliminating dust and top-layer agglomeration.

Heating/Cooling Jacket and Temperature Control

Creating emulsions requires strict thermal management—from melting waxes and fats at high temperatures to controlled, uniform cooling of the finished batch.

When inspecting used equipment, check:

  • Jacket type – Is it water, steam, or thermal oil heated? It must align with your plant's existing utilities.
  • Thermal insulation – A properly insulated vessel reduces energy loss and ensures operator safety.
  • Temperature sensors – They should be positioned to accurately measure the core temperature of the product mass, not just the heating jacket.

Hygienic Standards and Construction Materials

The cosmetics industry is governed by strict hygiene regulations. The mixer must guarantee total microbiological safety.

  • Steel grade – Parts in direct contact with the product must be made of high-grade acid-resistant stainless steel (typically AISI 316L). Non-contact external parts can be AISI 304.
  • Surface roughness (Ra) – The cosmetic standard for internal surface finish is Ra < 0.8 µm (often mirror-polished) to minimize product residue adhesion.
  • CIP/SIP Systems – Integrated Clean-In-Place spray balls and Sterilization-In-Place capabilities save significant time between batches and ensure cleanliness. The machine design must be free of "dead legs" where cream residue could collect.

Automation, Repeatability, and Scalability

Consider the control level you require. Older machines may feature simple manual panels, while newer used models often come equipped with advanced PLC systems and touchscreens (HMI). Automation enables recipe storage and precise control over time, speed, and temperature—essential for achieving batch-to-batch repeatability.

Also, remember working capacity. Total vessel volume is not the same as working capacity (which is typically 70–80% of total volume). Choose a size with a slight margin to allow for easy production scaling.
