Storing aggressive chemical substances is one of the greatest challenges in the industry. Reagents such as concentrated acids, bases, or strong oxidizers require strict adherence to the highest safety standards. The foundation of safe storage lies in acid-proof tanks. However, deciding on their size should not be left to chance. Both oversizing and underestimating the capacity carry serious operational and financial consequences.
Why is the material the foundation?
Before we analyze the issue of capacity, it is necessary to understand what we are dealing with. The term "acid-proof tank" most often refers to containers made of austenitic steel (e.g., 316L) or specialized plastics (e.g., high-density polyethylene – HDPE). These materials are characterized by extraordinary chemical passivity. They do not react with the stored substances, do not corrode under their influence, and do not release contaminants into them. The choice of a specific material depends strictly on the type, concentration, and temperature of the stored reagent.
Parameters determining the choice of capacity
The choice between a 1000-liter tank (e.g., the popular IBC) and a large, 5000-liter stationary installation depends on the analysis of several factors.
1. Rotation and consumption of reagents The key element is the rhythm of the plant's operation. A 1000-liter tank is an excellent solution for processes with a low or irregular demand for a given substance. It is easy to replace, store, or move. Conversely, in plants with continuous, intensive production (e.g., in the electroplating, chemical, or paper industries), where reagent consumption is counted in tens of cubic meters per month, using tanks with a capacity of 5000 liters (or larger) is a necessity. A smaller tank under such conditions would mean continuous deliveries and production line downtimes.
2. Logistics and supply chain A large tank means the security of production continuity. By storing 5000 liters of a reagent, the plant becomes independent of potential delivery delays. Furthermore, ordering chemicals in tanker trucks (so-called bulk deliveries) is significantly cheaper than in smaller containers (such as IBC totes).
On the other hand, a 1000 L tank offers incredible flexibility. IBC tanks can be easily transported by forklift throughout the entire plant. If the technological process requires point-source feeding of chemicals in various locations, small tanks are the optimal choice.
3. Legal aspects and safety (HSE) Storing hazardous chemicals involves strict environmental and Health and Safety (HSE) regulations. Every tank (both small and large) must stand on a spill pallet, which, in the event of a leak, will contain the stored liquid (usually 100% of the tank's volume, and in the case of multiple tanks – 100% of the volume of the largest one, but not less than 10% of the volume of all tanks).
A spill pallet for a 5000-liter tank is a large and expensive engineering investment, requiring a properly prepared foundation and fire protection measures. Smaller spill pallets for 1000 L tanks are mobile, cheaper, and do not require complex construction designs.
4. Available space and building conditions A 5000 L tank is a stationary installation. It requires a dedicated, properly ventilated room or a specially prepared outdoor station (taking into account UV protection if the tank is made of plastic, and thermal insulation preventing chemicals from crystallizing in winter). 1000 L tanks are much less demanding in terms of space. They can be stacked (placed one on top of another, usually up to three layers in a warehouse), which saves valuable storage area.
When to choose 1000L and when 5000L? Summary
Choose a 1000 L acid-proof tank when:
- The consumption of the reagent is low or periodic.
- You care about mobility and flexible transport within the plant.
- You do not have the infrastructure for large, stationary installations.
- You store many different, specialized substances.
Choose a 5000 L acid-proof tank when:
- The production process is continuous and requires constant access to large amounts of a single reagent.
- You want to optimize the costs of purchasing chemicals through wholesale orders in tanker trucks.
- You have the appropriate infrastructure (a hall, a dedicated zone with a spill pallet).
